Charla Griffy-Brown, PhD

Professor, Pepperdine University

Dr. Charla Griffy-Brown is an accomplished multi-disciplined leader, board member and professor who leads transformational change. She works extensively in the area of digital innovation and cyber risk helping organizations leverage new opportunities through analytics, risk evaluation, and emerging technology deployment to achieve their strategic objectives. Her track record includes working with C-level executives and boards for public and private companies across different verticals. She has been recognized as a thought-leader for her published work and is now distinguished as Editor-in-Chief of the international journal, Technology in Society. Dr. Griffy-Brown graduated from Harvard University, is a former Fulbright Scholar, and holds a Ph.D. in Technology Management from Griffith University in Queensland, Australia.

As a tenured full-professor at Pepperdine University, she has trained hundreds of executives in the areas of business innovation leveraging digital systems and optimizing cyber risk. She teaches in the Executive MBA Program, Full-Employed MBA Program, Masters of Science in Applied Analytics, Bachelor of Science in Management, and Digital Innovation Concentration. Importantly, she has extensive experience working with executives and boards in the area of information systems security and risk as an element of all new technology initiatives. In this regard she has worked with business leaders and executives to deploy a risk-based approach in organizations such as CitiNational Bank, Johnson & Johnson, Paramount Pictures, and Nintendo. She has been a regular speaker at the Pacific Telecommunications Council annual conference since 2012. She currently serves as a Director on two Corporate Boards and two non-profit boards including the California Technology Council. She also serves as a strategic advisor to executives.

At Pepperdine University, Charla Chairs the Fully-Employed MBA Committee, the Cyber Risk Professional Certification Advisory Board, and the Advancement of Student Learning Council which is responsible for reviewing all programs at the university. She received the university’s top teaching award: The Howard A. White teaching award in 2011 and was recognized in 2016 as one of the most cited scholars at the university. She received recognition as a Waves of Innovation grant winner in 2017 and was recognized by Representative Mimi Waters for her work with Small and Medium-Sized Business and non-profits on cyber-security through the Asian Business Association of Orange County in 2018 when she also Co-Chaired CyberSecure LA 2018 with SecuretheVillage.org and LA Mayor Garcetti’s Office. In 2019, she was also honored with the Pepperdine Graziadio School’s George Award for outstanding achievement as a scholar, professor, and service to the business community.

A former researcher at the Foundation for Advanced Studies on International Development, Tokyo, Dr. Griffy-Brown also served as an associate professor at the Tokyo Institute of Technology. During 2012 she served as a Visiting Fellow at Tsinghua University in China and Aoyama Gakuin University in Japan. In 2017, she was a visiting fellow at Jyvlaskyla University in Finland. She has lived and worked in Japan, China, Indonesia and Australia.
